Rui Kez’s work goes beyond simple portraiture. It takes a journey to explore the intangible connections between people and their environments. Through the exploration and abstractions of the ephemeral yet complex facial expressions within one's daily encounters, Kez blurs the boundaries between seemingly identifiable sensations, leaving the viewer an open space to feel, ponder and interpret. The brushstrokes intentionally erases the distinction between the background and the subject matter. The erasure serves as a gesture of abstraction to bring in fluidity and mobility within the static nature of a painting.
